The Town Council is faced with a 65% increase in energy bills for street lighting and is considering ways to reduce energy costs.
It has been suggested that street lights should be switched off at midnight and be turned back on again at 5am.
However, not all the street lights in the Town are owned by the Town Council and some, like the ones in the High Street, would not be switched off. A list of all the street lights owned by the Town Council will be available shortly on the Town Council's website.
Are you in favour of energy saving measures? Do you feel that there is an alternative to switching off the lights? Are there areas where you feel the lights should not be switched off?

Lights should not simply be switched off at Midnight. Several bars/clubs are open until 2pm. Either 1. Reduce power or 2. only switch off one in two at midnight or 3. keep lights on on 'main routes e.g. Browns Lane/Nevill Road/Rocks Park Road and switch off side turnings.

As fossil fuels run out we need to change our behaviour. Street lamps should only be on when the majority of us absolutely need them. You don't leave lights on in empty rooms at home, this is no different. So lights off everywhere after 12pm. Why we would need them to come back on at 5am I can't think. Anyone who needs light at these times will need to invest in a torch with rechargeable batteries. Further savings could be made by reducing the density of lighting, perhaps 1 in 4 streetlights being decommissioned by removing the fuse? We may be able to see the milky way again at night. How many kids have seen that?! Times are a changing folks. The drop in energy prices we are seeing now will be short lived as the world as whole depletes reserves. We need to be prudent from now on. Our mindset on energy needs to change or we are all in for a nasty shock.

Lower powered or more energy efficient lights should be considered. Although I too would like to see the Milky Way at night again I don't think that a public consultation will go that way. The reason for having the lights in the first place is to "Reduce the fear of crime". (Note the interesting wording that suggests that having lights does not actually reduce crime itself only the "Fear of..")
Why not have a monitored trial? Turn them off and see what happens.
Is the list of street lights available yet as I cannot find it on the web site.
